Early NBA Overreactions: Warriors are NBA Champions

Writer's picture: Benjamin HerronBenjamin Herron

It is early in the NBA season and it’s already time for overreactions on what teams suck and what teams are title contenders.

With so many games left, it is hard to predict where teams will stand at the end of the year. Although, I feel confident in saying that the Golden State Warriors are making out of the Western Conference.

Currently the Golden State Warriors are the number one team in the Wild Western conference and Stephan Curry has been looking as unreal as imagined.

His ability to hit the three even if you run him off his shooting spot is best in the league. Ability to pull up from anywhere and drain it. Not to mention if you are on him like white on rice he can still dribble everywhere around you and hit a shot.

Curry leads the league in three pointers per game with 5.2 and second in the league in points per game, 28.7. It’s not just Curry that has been playing great though.

Jordan Poole, the third year player out of Michigan has taken a major step for this Warriors team. This year he is averaging 5.2 more points per game than his previous season and 8.4 more points than his rookie year.

Poole is also averaging 1.5 steals per game. To go further, Poole is becoming a strong wing defender for the Warriors. He ranks 14 in the NBA in his defense rating with 101.6, ahead of the likes of Jimmy Butler and Myles Turner.

Poole is stepping up huge for the Warriors in sort of the two spot while Klay Thompson is out. When Klay comes back, Poole will be a great part of the second lineup for the Warriors.

Andrew Wiggins has also really bought into this Warriors playing style along with Kelly Oubre as both have been huge on both sides of the court. Last night, Wiggins played a huge part in their tough defense against the Brooklyn Nets that held Kevin Durant under 19 points.

The truth of the matter is that this team’s success starts and ends with Steph Curry. The Warriors have the number one team Offensive Defense Efficiency in the NBA and that is led by the All-Star guard.

Curry is second in the NBA in scoring and is first in three pointers made this year. Including three games this year where Curry has scored 40 or more points.

He leads on the defensive side of the ball too. Curry averages 1.7 steals a game which is 11th in the NBA. The NBA website has Curry ranked sixth in Players General defense. In defense ratings, Curry is ranked 6th with a teammate of his in front of him, Draymond Green.

With a strong leader like Curry having an MVP year and things only getting better with the addition of Klay Thompson and James Wiseman when healthy, no one can stop them. They dominate both sides of the court and that’s what you need in order to win a championship.

Being a strong defensive team matters in order to win. Old man saying but still rings true, “Defense wins championships.”

Since 2010, eight of the NBA championship teams were top five in defensive ratings and every team but one was in the top ten.

From what we have seen early one, Golden State has what it takes to win it all. The best thing about it, is that they sit at +650 odds to win the NBA title. Take the bet, take the free money. See you at the cashier.
