Kyle Shanahan is one of the best offensive minds in the NFL but as a head coach, it is safe to say he is pretty average and should be on the hot seat. In his five years as head coach of the niners, he has had only 1 winning season. That one winning season in 2019, the Niners did go 13-3 and make it to the Super Bowl where they lost to the Chiefs. The Niners on the road to the Super Bowl, whipped out teams. They beat the Vikings 27-10 and beat the Green Bay Packers 37-20. However, after that season, what has Kyle Shanahan done for this team?
Since that 2019 season, the Niners have a combined record of 9-15. Now the struggle has come from injuries which I will recognize with Jimmy Garoppolo getting injured last season and missing some time. Plus Nick Bosa being out for the whole 2020 season.
However, Shanahan has not been able to get his offense ranked in the top 10 in four out of his five years in the NFL, per ESPN rankings. For an offensive genius mind and the high standard he is held too, this does not cut it.
Shanahan is held at a level of Andy Reid when it comes to his offensive game plan. Although, Shanahan isn’t able to put a really good offense on the field. The lack of weapons isn’t the issue. With one of the best tight ends in the league in George Kittle. Then add DeeBo Samual, who PFF has as the 7th best receiver in the NFL andl is second in the NFL in receiving yards. The weapons on this offense are locked and loaded.
The Niners offensive line is not terrible either. Trent Williams is ranked the number 1 offensive tackle in the NFL, according to PFF. Alex Mack and Laken Tominslon are both top 15 in their respective positions. So why are the Niners 3-5? And why does Shanahan have a winning percentage of 44% as head coach?
To put it in perspective, here are some former NFL head coaches that have a better win percentage than Kyle Shanahan.
In his first five years as head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, Marvin Lewis had 42 wins and 38 losses. A winning percentage of 52.5% which is better than Shanahan’s current win percentage of 44%.
Jason Garrett in his first five seasons as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys had 41 wins and 28 losses with a win percentage of 59.42%.
With both Garrett and Lewis having better numbers than Shanahan in their first 5 years as head coach, maybe it’s time for something different in San Francisco.
The Niners have bright young talent and they should not waste it with mediocre head coaching. It is better to be honest and realize that they might have the most overrated coach in the NFL.
